N1 grammar rarely asks you what a pattern means. It asks you which of three nearly identical ones belongs in the gap.
～たところで and ～としたところで differ by two characters. ～に（は）あたらない and ～にかたくない are both negatives that are not really negative. You have met them all. In the seconds an exam gives you, you still cannot pick.
This book is not a list of every N1 pattern
Most N1 grammar books walk through the whole syllabus, one entry per pattern. This one does something narrower: it puts the confusable patterns side by side and teaches you to tell them apart.
Each unit takes three or four patterns that compete for the same blank, sets them out in one table — meaning, connection, and the trap that catches people — and draws the difference at the top of the page. The illustrations are not decoration. Each one is a single scene built to be remembered: three runners off the starting pistol, a shrug, a person walking straight ahead while both sides shout at them.
What one unit looks like
Every unit is four pages, and every unit is laid out the same way.

Some patterns are never spoken. Those units use documents
A number of N1 patterns belong to writing, not speech. In those units, page 2 is not a dialogue but the kind of text the pattern actually lives in — an internal memo, a newspaper article, a public notice, an editorial. Under each one there is a plain-Japanese rendering (口語で言うと), so the meaning is never locked behind the register.

The list of grammar patterns is based on the JLPT grammar list published by Tanos.co.uk (CC BY). Note that the JLPT has not published its syllabus since the 2010 revision, so the coverage here is a study guide, not the exam’s official scope.

日本語
N1 の文法は、意味を知っているかを聞いてきません。よく似た三つのうち、どれがこの空所に入るかを聞いてきます。
「～たところで」と「～としたところで」は二字違い。「～に（は）あたらない」と「～にかたくない」は、どちらも否定の形をした否定でない言い方。どれも見たことがあります。それでも、試験の数秒では選べません。
N1 の文法を端から並べた本ではありません
この本がするのは、もっと狭いことです。選べなくなる文型だけを並べて、その場で見分けられるようにします。
1 つのユニットは、同じ空所を取り合う 3〜4 つの文型を 1 枚の表にまとめます。意味・接続・そして「ここが違う／罠」。ページの上には対比のイラストが入ります。飾りではありません。覚えてしまえる一場面として描いてあります——ピストルと同時に飛び出す走者、肩をすくめる人、両側から怒鳴られながらまっすぐ歩いていく人。

話し言葉では使わない文型は、文書で読みます
N1 の文型には、会話ではまず出てこないものがあります。そのユニットの 2 ページ目は会話ではなく、その文型が実際に使われる文書——社内通達・新聞記事・掲示・論説——の形にしてあります。硬い文の下には「口語で言うと」を付けてありますので、文体のせいで意味が分からないままになることはありません。
