This is a 6-page extract, not the book. It contains Unit 08 in full — all four pages of it — plus the title page and the page that explains how the book works. The complete book is 21 units over 119 pages.
Why this unit
～たところで, ～としたところで and ～ようが all sit in the same gap and all mean something close to “even if”. They do not mean the same thing. One says the effort will change nothing. One shifts the sentence onto a person or a position. One says the speaker will go ahead regardless.
Unit 08 puts the three side by side and teaches you to tell them apart. It is a fair sample of what every unit does.

なぜこのユニットか
「～たところで」「～としたところで」「～ようが」は、どれも同じ空所に入り、どれも「〜しても」と訳せます。それでも同じ意味ではありません。ひとつは「やっても結果は変わらない」。ひとつは主語を人や立場の側へ寄せる。ひとつは「それでも自分はこうする」。
UNIT 08 は、この 3 つを並べて見分けられるようにするユニットです。どのユニットも同じ作りなので、1 つ読めば本編の見当がつきます。
