You have seen 日, 月, 人 many times. Can you write them without looking?
Reading kanji and writing kanji are two different skills. Most free N5 kanji sheets only show you the character and give you boxes to trace. You never find out whether it stayed.
This book has you trace, write, answer questions, and check your own answers — for 79 kanji, from the first one to the last one.
Only the readings you need now
The jōyō kanji table gives these 79 characters 288 readings. This book lists 159.
A reading is here only if an N5 word actually uses it. Readings used in N4 words are included too, and marked (N4) so you can see what is extra. Nothing else is listed.
The dictionary gives 生 fourteen readings. This book gives it four. You are not learning less; you are learning the readings that words at your level really use.
One unit is 4 pages
8 units, in 4 chapters. 40 pages in all. Every unit is laid out the same way.

8 questions in every unit, 64 in the book. Half ask you to read a kanji, half ask you to pick the right kanji for a reading — the two things the exam asks.
Trace, then write
The characters you trace are set in a textbook typeface — the shape a hand actually writes, not the shape a printing font invents.
Print the writing pages as many times as you like. You are not expected to remember a kanji the first time. Get one wrong, print that page again, and write it again from blank. A paper book cannot do this: your first attempt is still sitting on the page.
Stroke order, and a sheet that tells you when you are done
- Stroke order for all 79 is on two sheets at the back. Check it before you write
- The last sheet is a checklist of the 79, with a box for read and a box for written.
Tick them as you go. When every box is ticked, the book is finished
Most free material has no end. This one does.
How it is written
- Every kanji has furigana
- Meanings and example words on page 1 are given in English as well
- The questions are in Japanese only, so you answer them under the same conditions as the exam
- Example words are taken only from the N5 vocabulary, so nothing above your level appears

About the range
The JLPT has not published a kanji list since the 2010 revision. Lists in circulation therefore disagree — you will see N5 given as 79, 103, 112, even 181 characters. The 79 here follow our own N5 list. They are a study guide, not the exam’s official range.

日本語
「日」「月」「人」は 何度も 見た 字です。見ないで 書けますか。
読めることと 書けることは、別の力です。無料で配られている N5 の漢字プリントは、字を見せて、なぞる欄を置いて、そこで終わります。身についたかどうかを、確かめる工程がありません。
この本は、なぞって、書いて、問題を解いて、答えあわせまでします。79 字を、はじめから おわりまで。
読みは、いま 要る ものだけ
この 79 字が常用漢字表に持つ読みは、全部で 288 あります。この本が載せるのは 159 です。
N5 のことばが実際に使っている読みだけを載せています。N4 のことばで使う読みも入れてありますが、（N4） と書いてあるので、どこまでが今すぐ要るものかが分かります。それ以外は載せません。
「生」は辞書に 14 の読みがあります。この本には 4 つしかありません。減らしているのではなく、その級のことばが本当に使う読みだけを先に覚えてもらうためです。

各ユニット 8 問、全部で 64 問。前半が読み（漢字を見て読みを選ぶ）、後半が表記（読みを見て漢字を選ぶ）。本番の文字・語彙で漢字が問われる形と同じ 2 つです。
なぞってから、自分で書く
なぞる字は 教科書体です。手で書く字の形で刷ってあります。明朝体の飾りは手書きに存在しないので、書き取りに明朝を使うと、ちがう字形を教えることになります。
書き取りのページは、何回でも印刷できます。1 回で覚えられなくていい本です。まちがえた字だけ、そのページをもう一度出して、まっさらな状態から書けます。紙の本ではこうはいきません。2 回目に開いたとき、そこには前回書いた答えが残っています。
筆順と、「終わり」が見える 1 枚
- 79 字ぶんの筆順を、巻末に 2 まいにまとめてあります。書く前に、ここで確かめられます
- 最後の 1 枚は 79 字チェック。字ごとに「読めた」「書けた」の欄があります。

収録範囲について
日本語能力試験は 2010 年の改定以降、漢字リストを公開していません。そのため出回っている一覧は数が割れていて、N5 を 79 字とするもの、103 字、112 字、181 字とするものがあります。本書の 79 字は当社のリストに拠ります。学習用の目安であり、試験の出題範囲そのものではありません。
